International Maritime Museum

In the beginning was the sea. People stood on the shore - ready to sail towards new horizons. The journey through 3,000 years of maritime history begins. Historical globes and nautical charts show how the view of the world has developed up to the present day. Especially precious: a copy of the "Atlantis Majoris" from 1657, the first marine atlas printed in the Netherlands. Hand-painted crown compasses and gleaming gold sextants take you back to an era when determining a course required a steady hand and a sharp eye. A "radio shack", Morse code devices and signal books illustrate how seafarers still communicated into the 20th century. Selected models show the various developmental strands in seafaring: from Phoenician galleys and Roman gantries to the dragon boats of the Vikings, the cogs of the Hanseatic era and the caravels of the explorers to the last windjammers.
